Remembering That We are All Children of the Earth

Technology stocks may be up (or down depending on the day) but technology itself impacts not only our everyday lives but our earth as well.  Children of the Earth United, a not-for-profit organization with a strong technological presence, was started in 1998 by local educator Jennifer Reinfeld to educate children about the importance of preserving our earth.

"It is somewhat based on  learning about how Native Americans related to the natural world", said Reinfeld.  They believe that we are all children of the earth - all animals (including humans) and plants."The name [Children of the Earth United] comes from the idea that we all need to work together to help heal the planet."

Goals of the organization include: developing a greater understanding and respect for animals, plants, water, soil, air and energy systems; comprehending the positive and negative environmental effects of our actions; acquiring a knowledge of practical, sustainable living strategies which consciously and carefully utilize our natural resources; obtaining information on nature programs, centers, and organizations; and finally, sharing and learning from each other's creative ideas and knowledge.

"Our aim is to accomplish these objectives through a free, comprehensive interactive educational information system accessible through the internet and through specific educational programs geared towards mainstream society.  We try to make it a guilt-free approach to gaining a deeper respect and appreciation for nature and her gifts."

Joseph Cornell, world-renowned educator and author is among those on the board of directors.  He has published such books as Sharing Nature with Children and is known for his ability to awaken others to the inspiration and beauty nature offers.

The Children of the Earth United organization will be represented at the Long Island Earth Day 30th annual celebration on Saturday, April 22 held at the Southaven County Park.

Children of the Earth United is always looking for input from children, teachers, parents, and anyone interested in sharing their information.  You can visit them at  their web site - www.childrenoftheearth.org   and check out the pages on amazing animals, wildflowers and poems and stories that children have written about nature's beauty.  Children can easily submit their artwork, poetry and stories through the web site.

Donations are greatly appreciated.  "We have a special honorary gift program where people can honor the memory of a loved one, birth of a child, wedding, anniversary, etc.and a beautiful personalized certificate is sent which announces the donation."  To send this certificate just send a note with the name of the person and your address along with your donation to: Children of the Earth United, P.O. Box 258035, Madison, WI  53725. These donations are tax-deductible to the extent provided by law.

They are also looking for volunteers, perhaps retires people, looking to share their information about the earth.  If you are interested in volunteering for Children of the Earth United, please contact Jennifer Reinfeld at 608-237-6577 or e-mail her.
